For me, the easiest way to understand anything is by looking at a basic numbers comparison. In Shared hosting, anywhere from 100 to 1,000+ customers may be hosted on one server. Each customer's web site typically shares the same pool of (and competes for) CPU and memory resources. In Virtual Private hosting (also known as VPS—virtual private server hosting or VDS—virtual dedicated server hosting), one server is carved up into a limited number of units; anywhere from 4 to 20+ customers each receive their own slice of CPU and memory resources. Lastly, in Dedicated hosting, one customer leases the entire server and is able to utilize the full amount of CPU and memory resources of the machine. With the nutshell explanation above, you can see that your decision on which type of hosting that you will need mainly depends on what type of web site you have and the budget you are able to spend.
Let's take a look at some hypothetical examples. Martha wants to start a personal web site about her love for cooking with fresh vegetables. She is a novice when it comes to web site creation but wants to start learning HTML as she puts together mostly textual web pages with a few of her favorite photos. The fact that Martha's new web site is all static (no use of web scripting with dynamic data) and will initially receive little visitors, she is the perfect candidate for a Shared hosting plan. A Shared hosting plan will cost her a small monthly or yearly amount, and she will be able to 'learn as she goes' with limited knowledge.
In contrast, Patricia runs a popular blog about New York City fashion that receives over 2,000 visitors per day. She considers herself an advanced user and self-manages her web site on a Virtual Private hosting plan. Patricia's visitors have been complaining that her blog has been loading slower and slower compared to months ago. Patricia's web hosting company notices that the popular fashion blog utilizes 100% of the allocated memory in her Virtual Private hosting plan during peak hours. Patricia decides that it is time to upgrade to a Dedicated hosting plan that will have more memory and uses the money that she has received from sponsors of her blog to lease a Dedicated server.
There are many other questions that will need to be answered on a case-by-case basis before you purchase a hosting plan such as "how reliable is the web hosting company and do they offer refunds?", "do I want to/know how to manage my own VPS or Dedicated server?", "where is the physical location of the server that I will be hosted on (i.e. will my majority of visitors from the UK be able to access my site quick enough?)", "what is the redundancy of my data?" and so forth. Good luck on your search and leave a comment if you have a question!

In web hosting, its good to have a hoster that is debt-free so you can ensure your site won’t go down in 3 months because of under-funding. With Onewebhosting.com, that is not a problem, and to back it up, they ensure your satisfaction with great customer service.

I have used many hosting companies using shared hosting for a number of websites, but then purchased reseller hosting on shared servers. after a while I noticed I had a lot of clients registered with me hosting their websites on my reseller plans. In the end I purchased dedicated servers and moved all the sites to them. I have recently set up a small hosting company http://stapolinhosting.com that I hope will grow at a steady pace over the coming years.
But I can defenitly say that if you need a lot of resources, go for dedicated hosting.
